Pascal MAGIS was born the first April 1955 in Aurillac France, but spent his childhood in Meyrals, a village in Périgord Noir. He went to the College Saint Joseph in Sarlat. He left in 1971 to study at l'Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs of Limoges.

After five years of study he gained a solid foundation in art. His dislike for a particular conceptual painting of the time steered him towards tapestry. He gained his diploma National des Beaux Arts in 1976.

He held an exhibition with other artists in the gallery every summer. This was warmly received by the press and the public. These exhibitions were always of the highest quality and made the name and the work of Pascal Magis well known throughout the art world.

In 1977 he meets his future wife.

In 1988, suddenly colour flooded into his work which became increasingly abstract.

At this stage he returned to painting, his first love, and expressed himself in acrylics. What his last sketches revealed, his first paintings confirme : from now on he lives by instinct, colour and free expression.

In the last ten years, Pascal Magis has exhibited in France and many other countries (cf. “gallery” page). His renieuwed studio will welcome you every summer and on “rendez-vous” the rest of the year.

WHAT THEY WROTE ABOUT PASCAL MAGIS

Pascal Magis ! What an odd person ! In 1988, just when he was recognized as one of the most talented tapestry-workers of his generation, he decided to give up working in wool. Henceforth, it will be through the acrylics and the paint brushes that he expresses himself.

That which we could feel in his last tapestry work was confirmed in his paintings : he has ceased to belong to the considerable family of figurative representationalists. This one was perhaps too rigid to permit his intensely fertile imagination.

The nudes and the maternalistic women of his earlier drawings are forgotten. He has replaced them by large splashes of color that oppose themselves or are in contrast with, here or there, mirthful transparent tones. All of this is perfectly bewitching.

Pascal Magis's pictures are so rich, so full of material and so innovative that it is not always easy to subdue them. One has to persevere in order to achieve this.

Without giving in to fashion and without references to the contemparary schools, Pascal has found his own way in which to be colorful and luminous.
